Financial considerations

Financial consideration mainly consists of the production budget, This is because the production budget includes:

  • Client - Creative Producer.
  • Client - Sales Team.
The production budget also includes:
  • Music royalty payments (collected by the P.R.S.).
  • Voice over artists fee's.
  • Studio Fee's.
Trafficking cards: are basically what time and day your Ad will be broadcast. and what channel. These are very useful because you can see exactly we there going to be played, this would be helpful so you can make sure your target audience will be listing.

Underneath  trafficking card, you will see how many listeners will roughly be listing and how many times they will be hearing your Ad.

Rate Cards: these are just the production summery and the cost to have your ad made and air'd for a week.

This cost includes:
  • All studio costs
  • Voice Over Artist Cost's
  • Music Costs
  • Broadcasting Cost'
But this doesn't include VAT.

Music

When creating a commercial radio ad, it is highly important you make sure you chose a good song, his is because if you don't the advert might not be as good of a hit as you thougt it might have been.
There is specific regulations regarding the use of music. This is because there is 2 different types of music that you can use in a radio ad, These are :

  • Royalty Free
  • Commercial Music
These different types of music are very different, this is because the royalty free music can b used as much as a Creative Producer or the client wants, but the commercial music is a very different story. The commercial music can be used up to 7 seconds for free, but anything after that is going to cost the client. This is because you have to pay royalty, these are forms of payment paid to both the producer and the artist of the music. This would intern raise the price of the overall advert. the reason why the client might want to pay this little bit extra might be because music i the advert makes it more memorable.

These are some of the legal terms used:
  • Licensing, this is encase you wanted to use a copyrighted song in your advert, you would need to get permission from the company that has copyrighted the song, but also from the artist themselves.
  • Strategies, these can be very useful because i you wanted to use a song that is copyrighted, instead of getting the licence to use it, this allows you to just play the song, but this can be expensive.
  • Fair Use, This is where you don't have permission to use a song, and don't have a licence to play that music. this is illegal but only if the music is recognizable.

Production roles

Creative Producer: These are basically the directors of the radio. These are the the people that have a lot of responsibility they both talk to the client and find out what they want, but also discuss the prices with the client. They are also responsible for telling the team what the cliant wants and generally being the project manager of everything that goes on within his team. I would say the Creative Producer is the main organizer for the team.

Recording Engineer: These are the soldiers of the music editing world. these are the people operate the mixing boards and make use of the music library and do all the editing for the sound and mixing. They also talk to the Creative Producer to see if the sound for the ad is correct and if theirs anything else they need to add. They then transfer this information to the voice over artist, This is so the artist knows how to say certain things and how the music side of the ad is going to be happening.

Copy Writer: This job basically entails you to talk to the Creative Producer, this is because the Creative Producer will let you know how to write the script, such as informational or comical. They then will ask for the information about the client, like there name, slogan, contact info. The script then is given to the voice over artist. who reads the script to the Recording Engineer.

Voice Over Artist:There are 3 different types of voice of artists. These are use for different things, and to create different feels on the advert. These 3 different artists are:

Voice actors:

    • Most used for adverts.
    • these are professional actors.
    • Found by there agents or on a website.
you can find many different types of voice actors, this is because the client want 17 year old, Indian, Female. This could be to give to advert a specified feel to it. The different types of voice actors can be found using there agents. a great page for this is http://www.thevoiceovergallery.co.uk/. The voice actor, once chosen will arrive at the studio, and read the script, whilst the Creative Producer tell him or her how to to say specific words.

Celebrity Voice over:
  • Used to attract the audience.
  • Costs more
  • They also get contacted through there clients.

Session Vocalist: you would contact these if you needed the odd jingle being sung in your ad. These are basically used for singing back up, or the slogan.

Production facilities

Production Facilities are one of the most important things you need to create a commercial radio advert. This is because it entails all of the necessary equipment that you will need to both create the advert and edit it.
With every advert that broadcast's on the radio it will have been created using the same or similar equipment to what i am about to mention.
You will need:

  • Use Of  Music Production Libraries. (songs, Pre-recorded effects)
  • The Use Of Voice Recording Equipment. (Mic).
  • Editing Software. (Reaper, Adobe audition).
These three can be found in any good recording studio and are sometimes even found within the actual radio station itself. But these are mainly used in a production House.

An example of all of three key components for a radio broadcasting advert:

This is an example of our college radio's Production music list: this is music that is roualty free and doesnt require payment to the producer for using.
.

This is an image of a professional recording studio:

This is a sound-booth, found within a studio particularly made to create a soundless atmosphere, making sure that the sounds recorded within it would be crisp, clear and without interference.

This is a screenshot of our college editing software:

(In this editing software you can see we used te production music of 'deck those halls')
